Stoneleigh 2010 - The Events Season Starts Here!

Like most MG owners who attended the International “MG Show and Spares day at Stoneleigh” I spent quite a large proportion of my Saturday preparing my MG for Sunday’s event!

On the day I was up early for the journey, only for the previous days efforts were in vein due to the snow fall that occurred over night! Still, I wasn’t going to give up without a fight!

Arriving at Stoneleigh we were greeted with a extremely helpful event crew that guided us to the parking shed which was already fit to burst with MGs of all ages and varying rarity – never have I been so excited about a car park before! –

A few pictures later and the quick walk to the centre began, again aided by the helpful event crew and ticket desk personnel who greeted us with a warm welcome.

Upon entering the main hall, we immediately came across a gorgeous TF Raven Black LE500 which assured us we had found the correct venue.

Also located in the main hall were the stands for the MGCC where merchandise was on offer, a helpful crew to talk about the MGCC as well as the upcoming events such as MG Live! And the registers for the “F/TF” and the “Zeds” were located just opposite the main MGCC stand.

Both MG registers had displays of rare cars with the “F/TF” register presenting a stunning cassis 2009 85th anniversary TF, and the Zed register displayed a Poseidon ZT-T 260 as well as a ZS 180 safety car.

In the second hall there were a large variety of cars for sale, ranging from MGAs, to MK2 ZSs and displays from clubs such as the “Sprite/Midget” club. Various owners groups also displayed their cars, of which a TF caught my eye for its immaculate condition, one example of some well loved and cared for MGs.

Throughout the entire show were a vast array of parts for all MGs and various items of auto memorabilia of which personally I was exited to find quite a variety of MG Sport and Racing’s “MG XPower” branded goods. All in all the event was extremely successful, with something on offer for all MG enthusiasts. By late afternoon, the weather had cleared to create a bright sunny setting for the journey home, for which was spent “Top down” for many.

A New Year Present For All?

Over a month has passed following the international launch of the new MG6 at the Chinese Guangzhou Auto show, but what is the general consensus for it?

Dare I say naturally there seems to be a split in opinions, however the reasoning behind both love hate opinions are interesting.

Many against the 6 raise the question of whether it is a ‘true’ MG or not, but what criteria does it actually need to fill in order to earn that status?

MG has produced most variants of vehicle and in turn have all sold well (some better than others). Others say it looks nothing like an MG; and they may have a point, but what is being over looked is the somewhat ‘necessity’ for a car of today to fit a certain mould and preconception in order for it to sell and sell well, especially entering the market the way the MG6 is.

Initially I don’t think MG can afford to take too many risks until they have proved themselves in areas which matter in modern motoring i.e. reliability.

The lack of risk will be understandably hard for the true enthusiast, myself included, but these initial moves will I’m sure work out in the long run and allow the MG designers of forthcoming models to add that sense of uniqueness found in the MGs of past that set them apart from the rest.

To most, the biggest emphasis is where it has come from, in order for it to be British and an MG, it needs to built here, not just developed – though British development counts or a lot.

Come on MG, tell us what we need to know and hear… It is a true MG, it drives like a true MG, it feels like a true MG and Longbridge will be responsible for that.

Octagonally yours!

Roy Locock - Top bloke!

Most of the MG Car Club's members and also the wider MG community will have heard about the brilliant exploits of Roy Locock.

Happy-go-lucky Roy successfully completed his around the World trip in an MG Midget after surviving earthquakes, floods and terrifying attacks from the Taliban. I've run out of superlatives to describe Roy's adventures, so have my colleagues at MG Car Club HQ. 'Awesome' seems to be the most popular word selection.

The MG Car Club have worked closely with Roy since his return to maximise the amount of coverage his journey received in the media. The increased effort has worked, click here to see the results.

Roy's decision to conclude his journey at Abingdon was a good one. Journalists and media outlets love the history associated with the MG factory. Journo's also respond warmly to MG's iconic British character, the marque exudes a certain charm that no other car manufacturer can rival. Fact.
All being well, Roy's reliable steed, affectionately named 'Bridget the Midget' will be displayed on the MG Car Club's stand at the Classic Car Show in November.

Hope to see you at the NEC, discounted ticket info is here.
